Im coming to Glasgow in Sept 2005 to study MSc IT (Im from NZ) and have been looking at the different accom options. Does anyone stay at the Queen Margaret accom (or Kelvinhaugh)? any opinions on how good it is vs. getting my own accommodation. Im leaning towards uni accom due to convenience, students there, security etc but it would be great if i could get some 'real' opinions as opposed to the uni accommodation flyer.
Oh well... QM or Kelvinhaugh gate are good and convenient as you have your own shower/toilet and relatively new. I have to say that QM is more posh and "nicer" in every way, BUT it is located in the middle of a "nice" neighbourhood where you cannot find anything other than houses plus the LONG walk from Uni (20-25 min) that justify getting a bicycle, but not getting public transport.
I've been living in KG for 2 years now and it is very convenient for me, as I do not have to worry about paying bills, getting things repaired and cleaning the kitchen because someone comes every week to do so. You get cable internet connection (around 100K) not really fast and tends to be highly restrictive as we cannot download any music, videos, p2p or stream media...
Private accommodation is certainly cheaper and you would get much more space for your money. I like small rooms, so I do not care. I prefer new buildings rather than 120 y.o. Victorian flats... I've heard of people paying around £250 or less including bills, while student accomm will go well over £320 next year. Laundry is free in student accom.
Mmmm... what else to say....? KG and QM are for posgrads mainly, so you won't really get parties every week... and sometimes months can pass without knowing who lives in the flat next door.
It's all I can say

Thanks Webhamster! Thats the type of info i was looking for. Im not too concerned with space either, just want somewhere that has own bathroom and i can lock up and leave securely.
How far is the walk from KG to uni? And are there many pubs / restaurants etc around KG and a supermarket?
Its about 10/15 minutes walk which isn't too bad. Plenty of bars and restaurants in the area too and theres a few corner shops for your basic things. If you want a real supermarket though the nearest one is about 5 mins from the university and 25/20 mins from KG. I live at KG too and can't recommend it highly enough - no complaints here!

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you'll be a mile from them, and you'll have their shoes
Sounds good! I will be putting KG as my first option then... thanks for your help. Ive been looking at the map of the residences etc and cause its not to scale it is difficult to gauge distances. KG is a bit cheaper too which is a bonus...
Thanks again K
One last q: Whats the safety issue like .. walking at night from uni? or when its dark (Does it get dark at 4pm??)
Yep, around December you may see the Sun between 8 am and 4pm only, hey but around June you will get it from 4am till 10:30pm!!!!
Safety walking from Uni... most people have to walk through Kelvin way which is in the middle of Kelvingrove park. The bad part is that is not very well illuminated, but as long as you walk along with someone else, following reasonable safety precautions you'll be fine.
