Just introducing myself... the Webhamster of this place. I am a posgraduate student in Virus genetics, about to start my third year in Glasgow and my fourth living in the UK!!! Just joined the International Society last year, basically because didn't know it existed... silly me, missed so much fun!
It is unbelievable how fast time goes! So if you are coming to the UK for a year, believe me, it is nothing... will go very quick, so make sure you enjoy it all the time!
ASK ASK ASK never keep any doubts !
I'm from Mexico! and as you can see know nothing about webpages, although I have been using them for 10 years now. I am very proud to say that I have one email account that is 10 years old! Defeat that!!!! (Yes, and get tons of spam everyday)
Enough, this is just to encourage you people to say hi!
Truly yours,
Edgar

I’m Neil and I’ve just been appointed as the new treasurer of the international society and so I thought with my first act I should try to save you all some money.
First of all I should introduce myself since this is my 1st post. I’m a 4th year accountancy and economics student (exiting stuff!) and I have just returned from an exchange year at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I had such an amazing year that I decided to join the international society to continue my international lifestyle. It has been a lot of fun so far and I’m confident that the society will continue to be hugely enjoyable for the next 2 terms.
I don’t know if any of you have encountered problems with phoning home yet but I found it to be a major issue in Canada. I’ve found that Britain has a much better phone infrastructure than Canada and so hopefully your phone bills shouldn’t be too high. However, I was introduced to a company called telediscount which has saved me a lot of money on calls to Canada, USA, Australia and France but they serve almost all countries. They are a web based company and can be found at http://www.telediscount.co.uk
When I first saw their site I thought that there must be some catch since the call rates appear too good to be true for many countries. I certainly found in Canada that the offers on phone cards were too good to be true as they added endless service charges. However, I have had absolutely no problems with this company and the charges have been consistently low. It is also much simpler to use than phone cards. You just go to their web site and search for the country you want to call in the access numbers section. You phone that number and then dial the international number as you normally would. There is a good Frequently asked questions (FAQ) section which alleviated a lot of my concerns.
I’ve never used telediscount from a mobile phone or pay phone so I can’t comment on how effective it is for these methods of communication. My experience has only been with a land line. The only small thing which I have noticed is that the access numbers occasionally change and so I don’t know how much you are charged for phoning an out of date access number. So I would advise that you regularly check for new access numbers.
I realise that all of this might sound like a bit of a commercial advertisement but I promise that I have absolutely no affiliation with this company. Furthermore, I and the international society can take absolutely no responsibility for your use of this company. It is simply a recommendation for you to check out and see if you can save yourself some money.
I hope to see some more introductions here. It would be great to get to know you all.
Magda. Polish members? Hmmm... Haven't met anyone from Poland just yet unless you are one. Just come along on Thursdays and discover things for yourself
There are polish members - well at least one who signed up on Thursday night, come to think of it, it may have been you as I am terrible at remembering names - if that wasn't you then yes there is at least 1 polish member!
It seems to me that you've been thinking about me:) as a Polish member of society. However, Ive noticed far more Polish names on the members' list so we may meet one day during our Thursdays nights.
I'm a German student writing my Master's thesis at the WCMP, Anderson College, Glasgow University.
I'd like to join your club but I don't know if this is possible (not matriculated at the uni).
Since I can't be in the pub this Thursday I'd like to know if there are any people interested in traveling around Scotland and/or (hill) walking. I've already been to a couple of places with my girlfriend but there is still soooooo much to see....
Hi Holger and welcome to the International Society. If you want to join you can come to any of our events to sign up - not just the pub nights. Its open to absolutely anyone not just Glasgow University Students. This weekend we have a halloween Party at Cuba Norte in the Italian Centre, John Street (near george square - taxi fair should be under £5) with prizes for best costume. Hope to see you there or otherwise sometime soon!

Sounds like you'rehavinga great year, andmy space bar isn't working. Loving lifein Ecuador, and looking forward to catchingup on all the news soon. Till next time...
Great to hear that you are doing well and enjoying the other side of the world!!!!
Over here, we have a great membership and huge demand for all our activities! But afterall we are having a good time!
Getting cold and dark at this time of the year... so we are in the pub more often... at least that is my excuse, and can hardly remember the name of all the committee members as there are so many! 20 maybe?
If you ever go to Argentina, let me know. I have a few friends overthere.
Best regards
Edgar

Good to hear things are well with you too. Things here are pretty good - halloween party last night was completely packed and everyone had a great time. In other words we're doing our best to carry on your legacy from last year!! Keep posting when you've got time - always good to hear from you.

Well, Ceilidh & Burns Supper on Wednesday? I think you are talking about the one organised by the Geographical Society? I think is on Wednesday in the GUU but have not idea where or how to get the tickets, sorry.
Although I remember that they were quite pricey, like 10 quid or so.

I'm Alissa, and I'll be coming to Glasgow for the next year to study film. I'm American (I live in Connecticut and go to school in New York), and I absolutely cannot wait to experience somewhere new and different.
So I just wanted to introduce myself, maybe meet a few people before I even get over there. The International Society pretty much looks like it's the place to be, so here I am.
The GUIS sure is the place to be Alissa. See you in sunny Glasgow very soon. If you have any queries, just post to the forum and someone (members or the committee members) will reply to it in due time.
Me just sitting right in the centre of Saint Petersburg, cannot complain. I really like the country!
Just to let you know that I am not the WEBMASTER and the Website is not my responsability anymore, but still the Webhamster and promise to kick a couple of arses as soon as Im back in sunny Glasgow to have it updated as it should!
OK have to go now, I'll have dinner with a beautiful Russian woman.

I'm Dieter, Austrian, and I will be arriving in September to start studying. Could anyone briefly tell me a bit more about this society? What kind of things are going on? I'd also like to know if there are any other Austrian or German students studying or going to be studying at the university (as undergraduates), maybe someone knows... Any undergraduate internationals at Murano street?
My name is Carlos Ugalde, I'm 25 years old, and I will be starting my studies at the Faculty of Engineering (PhD) in the University of Glasgow very soon (Oct. 1st). I'm originally from Mexico and as an international student who will be living in a new city and a new country I'm really looking forward to meet a lot of fun and nice people. I really like to travel, music in general, sports (specially football), science, partying, and having a good time. Hopefully I will be living in the Kelvinhaugh flats.
I thought it would be nice to say hello to you guys (lads and lasses ). You will definitely hear from me soon in Glasgow.
