questions from an erasmus student

Hi

I'm going to Glasgow next year, within the european program ERASMUS (to study Economics), and I have some basic questions I'd like to make.

How much is an average meal in one of the University's caffeterias?

What is the best students' residence? I'm thinking of staying at Kelvinaugh.

Are the students allowed to bring home the books from the library? How many libraries are there?

What are the exam periods?

Is there any place where one can find course notes, done by the students in previous years? Here in Coimbra (Portugal) there are some office centres that keep that kind of notes.

Thank you
Miguel

Hey Miguel,

Well, the average meal could be around 3-5 pounds depending on what you are having. I would say that a fiver could easily get you soup, baguette and a soft drink.

Best residence? all depends... the newest one is Queen Margaret and it is probably the nicest one, but it is in the middle of nowhere with not many shops around. On Kelvinhaugh... there are Kelvinhaugh Street flats and Kelvinhaugh Gate flats. The good ones (and more expensive) are the KGate flats because they are ensuite (your own toilet and shower).

Library. Yes you are certainly allowed to borrow books. How many and for how long depends on whether you borrow from the short loan area or from the rest of the collection. The short loan are books in most demand and you can borrow them for a few hours or just overnight. How many libraries? the main library is certainly huge and certain departments have their own but much smaller and probably more restrictive.

Course notes... I have no idea and never heard of it. I think might depend on your course and department. You can get the exams from previous years though.

If you have anymore questions let me know.

Cheapest cinema... mmm... hard to tell. The best deal you can get is to get yourself an Orange mobile phone and then you get the 2x1 Wednesdays and you can add on your student discount, so you end up paying around 1.50 for each ticket.

the most expensive ticket could be around 6 pounds if you are not careful. A very good venue, good international quality films, almost no hollywood rubbish www.gft.org.uk

I think the best option is to...

look at the "window on Byres Road"... hehe. Everybody on the West End knows that one.

There is a newsagent on Byres Road, close to the Rubiyat pub, across the road from the Aragon pub mmm... oh and next to Whistler's Mother Restaurant, with dozens of ads advertising flats, from very cheap to quite posh ones, so go and have a look.

Advice... look at as many flats as you can, dont go with the first one you see...

Thanks Webhamster!!

Another question: it is easy to find a job like waitress or something like this just for some hours per day?

And, what about visiting Scotland? There is somebody who organises trips around Scotland?

Thankyou,

Nuxka

Sure, there are plenty of restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs and shops where you can get a part time job, many people do it.

About visiting Scotland... EXCUSE ME! WE organise the best trips!

hi!

i see, obviously no one wrote in her for a looong time ;) hopefully somebody will answer...
alright:
my girlfriend will start studying "international politics and human rights" next semester in glasgow... she's looking forward to it and already has a place at kelvinaugh gate (the place with own bathrooms and showers as i just read ;)), where she will live together with five roomates i think? the problem is, that i live in karlsruhe germany, studying here for the next two years, but i would really like to visit her of course!

do you know if it's okay to stay at her place in kalvenaugh gate during the time of my visits (think it's gonna be about two or three days a month), because going to a hostel each time + paying the flights would be a little too much for me :(
she's worried about that, because she read that it's not allowed to bring other people to her place...
is it a very strict forbiddance or would nobody notice anyway?

really looking forward to any answers! big thanks already!!

greetings from germany!

tim

p.s. or is there a camping lot nearby maybe ;);););) ...?
